Professor MacIntyre is currently conducting a clinical trial of masks, respirators and outdoor air avoidance for reducing the health effects of bushfire smoke exposure. This study was started in the summer of 2020/21 following the severe bushfires of 2019/2020. The study will continue this coming summer to finish four summers of data collection. Professor MacIntyre’s area of expertise is masks, and although masks are recommended during bushfire smoke exposure, there is no clinical data on their effectiveness. The clinical trial will address this knowledge gap and inform policy to protect people from the effects of smoke exposure.
